Some, possibly most, of you will be aware that one of our number collapsed with a cardiac arrest while refereeing a game in January 2024. Quick decision making, skilled CPR and defibrillation, led by the two team physios, saved that referee’s life on the pitch before the paramedics arrived. Well that referee was me and, thanks to the actions of these wonderful people, I am here continuing with my life and writing this article.
In recognition of their actions, the East Midlands Rugby Union Referee Society recommended the two physios, Scott Hills of Luton RFC and Lauren Poole of Biggleswade RFC, to the Royal Humane Society.
The Royal Humane Society has awarded both Lauren and Scott The Resuscitation Certificate of The Society for assisting in restoring a man to life. I was delighted to be there when these awards were presented to the pair on Wednesday evening by the outgoing EMRU President, Roy Shutz. Thank you and congratulations to Lauren and Scott.
